Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze (Sonja Palmer) I’ve been excited about this comic for months, so I was thrilled when it finally came out and more than lived up to expectations.  Coates writes an interesting and complex story about T’challa and the political turmoil Wakanda is going through, while playing with gender politics and revolution. The art is absolutely stunning and beautifully reflects Wakanda’s futuristic technology. Stelfreeze captures the rage of these characters so well, and T’challa’s conflict through his art. Overall, the series so far reads like an epic poem, and its one I know I’ll want to go back to again and again. Velvet #14 by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Elizabeth Breitweiser, and Chris Eliopoulos  (Katie McGuire) Imagine if Ms. Moneypenny, the stalwart secretary to the head of MI6 and verbal sparring partner of James Bond, was once one of the top clandestine operatives in her own right and that when Bond turns up dead, she’s suspected of killing him. Vision by Tom King, Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Jordie Bellaire (Eric Margolis) Terribly predictable or terribly consistent? Vision was my book of the year for 2015 and it is again my pick for mid-year 2016. Everything about this book is very special and I stand by my statement that Vision will be one of Marvels classics in years to come. Pretty Deadly by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Ríos (Jenn Northington) Since Issue 6 dropped in November, the second arc of Pretty Deadly has been the first thing I read when I get my monthly comics-mail. Strong right out of the gate, the story has been building beautifully with each new installment. We’re now in the trenches of World War I, following a young black American soldier as he fights alongside the French. His mother is home dying, and the Reapers are out looking for him some to help, and some to hurt. Everything that I loved about the first arc is present in spades: the deep mythology, the spaghetti-Western influences, the careful storytelling, and Ríos’s game-changing art. I also see improvements; where the pacing and the mythology took real time and dissection to understand in Issues 1-5 and, to my mind, was best read in trade, this new arc has more clarity and is highly readable in installments. In short, one of my all-time favorite comics continues to be one of my all-time favorite comic, each word and image perfectly chosen. A-Force, Vol. 1 by G. Willow Wilson, Jorge Molina, Kelly Thompson, and Ben Caldwell (Keri Crist-Wagner) I picked up A-Force during Secret Wars knowing little to nothing about the majority of characters therein. She-Hulk, check. Captain Marvel, sure. But who the heck was Medusa, or Nico? And don’t even get me started on Dazzler. Regardless, I jumped into the story and I haven’t regretted it. The current A-Force is told through the eyes of our favorite pocket universe, Singularity, who just so happens to be the only one who remembers the events of Secret Wars. It’s a consistently heartfelt and entertaining book, with lots of action and fun team-ups. Despite a creative team switch at issue #5 the characters remain true to the original tone and I feel pretty confident going into the obligatory Civil War II tie-in issues. Saint for Rent by Ru Xu (Latonya Pennington) There are time machines and then there’s an inn for time travelers. The inn is run by a guy named Saint and his friends. In the very first chapter, there’s a cat, a monster, a kick-butt female time traveler, and a random surprise for one of Saint’s friends. It’s quirky unexpected fun and I love it. Besides the premise, a really cool aspect of the comic are the animated gifs that make some of the artwork seem 3-D. I’ve only read the first chapter, but I’m really excited to keep reading. Help Us! Great Warrior by Madeleine Flores (Hilary Lawlor) Look, Great Warrior is a bean with legs and a giant bow on her head. She’s lazy and she loves snacks and she occasionally kicks butt with an awesome sword. Her best friend is a badass trans woman superhero named Leo, and there’s a beautiful being of wisdom and light named Hadiyah who spends most of her time trying to get Great Warrior to do her duty and save the world. Somehow, Madeleine Flores managed to create an epic story about heroism and friendship that is hilarious and feels completely original and modern. I may never get over how great this comic is. Dont Come in Here by Patrick Kyle (Emma Lawson) Koyama Press publishes some of the best indie comics, and Patrick Kyle’s latest comic is definitely up there. It’s a bit of a break from his previous work, which tended to be abstract, super dense illustrations. He tones it down a bit here in favor of narrative, but it’s still got his beautiful weirdness all over the pages. The story (as much as there is one) is about a guy who lives in a supernatural apartment, and all the wonderful and strange things that happen there. I laughed so much reading this comic. You’ve got to check it out. Power Man and Iron Fist by David Walker and Sanford Greene (Jessica Plummer) It’s rare that third-stringers get a truly great spotlight series. Usually they’re mugging for closeups in team books, filling in the crowd scenes in crossovers, and maybe, if they’re lucky, scoring the occasional decent miniseries. But with Netflix bringing Luke Cage and Danny Rand from the third string to the second, along comes what is almost certainly the best showcase either character has ever had. Walker and Greene’s Power Man and Iron Fist is laugh-out-loud on every page, crammed not just with action and gags but with heart. It evokes the best of the duo’s original outing together back in the 70s while remaining absolutely fresh and looking like nothing else on the stands, and is an absolute joy to read every issue. It’s certainly sunnier than anything we can expect from Netflix, but if the folks there are smart, they’ll still mine this book for the gold it is while figuring out how to shape Luke and Danny’s friendship for the small screen. 2020: Twenty Years of Conundrum Press by Andy Brown (Ed.) (Hattie Kennedy) Conundrum turns 20 this year and to celebrate Andy Brown asked 20 Conundrumites (one for each year of the press, who had had a book out in that year) to contribute a new piece of work to this anthology. The result is excellent, a collection of comics, essays and memories that show the sheer range of works, authors and styles published by Conundrum. Like last years Drawn and Quarterly 25 Years Anthology this gave me new works by old friends and also opened my eyes to a number of new-to-me artists who I now intend to splurge on. I can thoroughly recommend you pick this up and discover some new-to-you artists too. I personally cant wait to see what the next 20 years hold for Conundrum. It is such an exciting time to be a fan of Canadian Comics! DC Comics: Bombshells by Marguerite Bennett, Mirka Adolfo, Laura Braga, Wendy Broome, J. Nanjan, Wes Abbott, and many more (Katie Schenkel) What can I say about DC Bombshells in the first half of 2016? I could talk about the second Batgirls issue that highlighted xenophobia used for political gain. I could talk about the Cuban American version of Lois Lane being introduced into the Bombshells universe. I could talk about the Ivy/Harley romance that included a beautiful moonlit kiss. I could talk about the recent, stunning subversion of a certain classic superheroine, featuring her as a proud young Jewish woman whose powers come from the legendary Judaic heroines of old. I could talk about all of that … but you know what, you should just read it for yourself. DC Bombshells is smart as hell and a delight every week and I will keep stressing to everyone who loves these heroines to read this book. Romeo and/or Juliet: A Chooseable-Path Adventure by Ryan North (Melody Schreiber) OK, so this isn’t a comic exactly. But it has plenty of awesome illustrations, and it hails from one of my favorite creators in the bizand there are a ton of comics references! (Perhaps surprising to fans of Shakespeare, but less surprising for Squirrel Girl afficionados.) I can’t really put into words how much I love this book. It’s hilarious, it’s fun, and it makes you think about Shakespeare and his romantic icons in whole new ways. It’s also SUPER fun to read out loud with friends and family. I’ll be sad when I die for the last time! 4 Kids Walk into a Bank by Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss (Dave Accampo) Just two issues out in the first half of 2016, but after reading the second issue, it’s clear to me that these four kids represent some of the best comics of the year. From Tyler Boss’ fun and compelling layouts to the witty dialogue that feels authentic and 80s without pandering or dropping in nostalgic references, this series from Black Mask is truly electric. Our four protagonists find themselves at that crossroads of adolescence emerging from arcades and RPG campaigns to discover that the larger world is just as full of threats and bullies as their sidescrolling video games. And how they act next? Insert Coin to Continue… Something New: Tales from a Makeshift Bride   Lucy Knisley (Swapna) Ill admit itâ€"comics have been tough for me lately. The toxicity of certain elements of fandom, combined with it being my day job, has made it harder and harder to just sit down, turn my brain off, and enjoy comics. But it was Lucy Knisley who reminded me just why I love the medium. This comic was at once effortless, easy to lose myself in, but also deep and meaningful. Knisley examines so many facets of what it is to get married, the institution of marriage, and how it might change (or not change) a persons perceptions of themselves. As always, the art is so incredible, with vivid colors splashed across the page. Series comics are having a harder and harder time keeping my attention, so I appreciated being able to dive into this substantial graphic memoir. A Critical Review of Samrith Kutco India Limited (SKIL) - Free Essay Example

SAMRITH KUTCO INDIA LIMITED (SKIL)* Samrith Kutco India Limited (SKIL) was established in 2000. It was a joint venture between Samrith Technical Services Private Limited, set up by the Government of India under the Companies Act 1956 in 1985 and Kutco, a leading consumer goods manufacturer in Japan. Kutco had taken up 50% stake in Samrith, leading to a 50-50 joint venture. It was not a smooth transition for Samrith Kutco India Limited(SKIL), now a private sector leading consumer durable maker from the Samrith Technical Services Ltd the 100% Central Public Sector Enterprise(CPSE). There were work culture clashes between the Indian work culture and the Japanese work culture existing in the Public sector. Usually the work culture in Public Sector was entirely different from Private sector in India and far more diverse while it is compared with Japanese work culture. The Public sector offered job security resulting at times with lower productivity as compared to private sector. There is overstaffing, which leads to less work load. Even in case of loss making PSEs, companies continue provided perquisites and facilities without thinking. The workers enjoyed more opulent holidays and fringe benefits. Due to all this, the mindset of a person was entirely change when he got the job in PSE. There is every possibility that employees feel a lot of inconvenience an d resistance to change time and again. The Company The SKIL had a capacity of manufacturing 560,000 ACs per annum. Analysts calculated that if the plants were closed for a day, it costed Samrith Kutco Rs 53 crore in revenue and Rs 6 crore in operating profit. If it was closed for two weeks, the sales loss could be Rs 742 crore and operating loss of Rs 84 crore. SKIL sold 98,596 ACs in June 2012. The company reported a net profit of Rs 889 crore over net sales of Rs 25,650 crore for the year ended March 2012. The company believed and devoted to generate value all the way through novelty, inspiration, quality, alliances, candidness and erudition. Samrith Kutco alone made 1.5 million Samrith Kutco families ACs every year. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s one AC every 12 seconds. It was AC so as to deliver low cost of operation with immense performance, competency and eco-friendly. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what true value was for the company. A team of over 8500 dedicated and passionate professionals were working for SKIL. This case has been developed by. Santosh Dhar, Shiv Ranjan, and Gharima Bhardwaj. Samrith Kutco had very dynamic RD department that worked with consonance with team of over 500 engineers and Samrith Kutco dealers and service centers in India. Working shoulder to shoulder with Team the company had added many achievements to its portfolio. With a view to enhance their capabilities, they had thought of setting up a state-of-the-art RD centre in Jhajjar, Haryana at an investment of Rs. 1000 crore. Spread over an area of 200 acres, this RD center was to be equipped to churn out not just high performing ACs, but test procedures among many other advanced facilities. By specific environmental training, they spread awareness to all workers working with them wherever appropriate. To manage risks, they had an Occupational Health and Safety Management System and a safe working environment had maintained. They documented all working environment risks, undertaking evaluation, reviews by internal and external and also manage all the important activities to avoid and control loss, injury, damage and infirmity. All was attained by taking after safe work carry out in operations and amid the procurement of another machine, tools instruments and plant. Annual budgeting was the time at which manpower planning activity would be commenced every year. Company would like to inculcate a universal practice and ethics amongst all its employees. It ensured that all employees shared a universal vision and purpose for the prospect. A planned induction impart ed to new employees to understand companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s history and culture. The compensation package was designed with other benefits like medical reimbursement, hospitalization benefits, and accident insurance. Through the policy of reimbursement of medical and hospitalization expenses, they fulfill the medical needs of employees. Company monitored closely controlled shift timings to achieve smooth production operations. Each year they made requisite public holiday calendar to facilitate its workers to partake in Religious Ceremonies, Festivals, National Events. They also encouraged all employees to avail authorized leave and privilege leave by providing allowance which allowed employees to travel with their families. SKIL had the practice of not sparing the employee who reached duties late even by 15 minutes. The employee had to surrender his half day leave. Moreover, if he was seen loitering around beyond stipulated lunch break, he was called and given verbal warning. A memo was issued if he continued to do the same and taken into account in the appraisal of the employee. Challenges With the advent of Global competition the challenges of running manufacturing outfits had surged. Costs and wages had increased, sales were poor volatile. Doing profitable business was becoming difficult. Every company wants to cut down their costs with improved productivity and had contract labour to cope up with situation. SKIL was no exception. It was also feeling the brunt of the existing environment. At SKIL, 40% workers were on contract and their salary was half of the regular workers although SKIL was among the better pay masters in the Industry. In Sonepat, young blue-collar workers had seen dramatic changes around them. Land prices had surged as Sonepat had become a commercial hub. Overnight, people had become rich and their lives had transformed simply because they had sold their lands at high prices. Such c hanges had re-calibrated worker expectation that had seen their surrounding transform into metro city with all modern amenities in a decade. Workers wanted to achieve everything in less time consequently they turn out to be less tolerant and fairly aggressive in their outlook. Poor wage hikes and raging inflation had added to the anxiety, resulting in an impatient, arrogant, intolerant workforce, who believed in taking aggressive stand for their demands. SKIL had many senior Indian executives who had been the backbone of the company and had significantly contributed in giving the company the present stature. But when it came to important decisions Japanese voice counted the most and dominated the crucial decisions. Indians and Japanese were far apart by culture. Japanese sense of discipline, punctuality, employee connect too were very different from Indians. So some loss of connect with Indians was unavoidable. In May 2004, As a part of a new human resources policy, managers and supervisors have authority to recruit trustworthy candidates in their opinion as workers to strengthening trust between management and workers. Company authorized its managers and supervisors to recruit workers they consider reliable as part of a new human resource policy aimed at building confidence between the management and workers. The workers demanded to frame a union that would take their issues to the management and resolve the conflict. But management did not allow them to frame the union in an apprehension that the workers will become all the more demanding. The workers thought that this move of the management was biased and unfair. Workers demanded higher wages to which management did not agree. Management wanted workerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hike in the salary should be performance based which was not acceptable to the workers. The workers in spite of repeated assurance from management that there would be higher wages if they would perform well did not agree. This lead to hig h dispute between management and worker. The company sent termination notices to 300-odd workers, who had been indulging in indiscipline. Workers had dishonored the good conduct bond that was signed by them with the company. Out of 1200 workers at the Sonepat plant, more than 600 were on contractual. The company had promised to employ casual workers as permanent employees. But no action had been taken so far. This was again a matter of dispute. The workers demanded that all terminated workers should be taken back immediately without penalizing them. The management turned deaf ear to the demands. This resulted into high level of dissatisfaction among the workers. They did not find any outlet where they would turn for their grievances. Some Trouble mongers under the influence of certain local political leaders who in their self interest did not want the unit to continue there along with the aggrieved workers went in to rampage. They attacked the HR manager, Ratan Bhardwaj who was t hought to be close associate of the Management and seriously injured him. Bhardwaj who had a narrow escape resigned after he was discharged from the hospital. The conflict continued and management did not want to budge before the workers. In between four HR Managers joined but could not resolve the conflict between workers and management as either party did not move from their stand. The workers threatened the HR Managers of dire consequences and therefore HR managers did not want to risk their lives and left the jobs. In Jan-2006 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å"July 2006, there was no HR manager. The unrest had started in May 2004 and continued till 2006. In August 2006, Shantanu Kumar, aged 38 year, an MBA graduate from IIM Ahmadabad joined as HR Manager. He had been already working with this group in Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore and had been associated with CSR active projects. He had worked in UNDP, UC Anti girl trafficking of West Bengal, Bangladesh and Nepal region. The company had full faith in him and was bestowed with the responsibility of curbing the unrest at the unit. It was a testing time for Shantanu Kumar. After joining he started observing that some people were bulling workers not to work by telling them they were highly influential and can go to any extent if workers did not adhere what they were saying. Mr. Shantanu quietly set up network with people like Superintendent of Police, District Magistrate of the local area and kept them informed about what was happening in the company. He decided to take workers into confidence but it was a risk since workers were highly volatile and even could damage him. He started getting regular threats for his life. Shantanu without getting deterred by these threats started visiting the homes of these workers and personally counseled them and told them how this company was giving them bread and butter and how important it was for them to support the company. He even went to the extent of telling them if they would not coo perate, the company can wind up its operation and set up at a new location with the result the workers will lose their livelihood and no other company would like to set up a unit in that location. So the workers and their children will be deprived of the opportunities that the company provided them by giving them better living and quality of life. After visiting each and every family he was able to convince the employees that it is in their interest that they should continue working and take care of the company. He then assured them on behalf of the company that company would take care of them and give due consideration to their demands in due course of time. Road Ahead In December 2006, the company announced that there will be hike of 10% in wages plus bonus for the employees from January 2007. Moreover the terminated employees were also reinstated with immediate effect. This gave relief to Shantanu Kumar as he was successful in convincing the trouble mongers and thereby smoo thing unrest among the workers. With the achievement of Shantanu in settling up the issue which had been troubling the management for years, Management promoted him to Sr. manager (HR GA). Shantanu was further promoted to DGM and made head of the entire unit. It was an achievement for Shantanu Kumar but he could not enjoy it fully as he was still apprehensive about the operations of plants. Although he knew that unrest was resolved at this particular point of time but his worry was that formation of union would not be acceptable to management and workers were very particular about the union as they thought Union was the only tool to get their demands accepted. With this constraint there was every possibility that such kind of unrest among workers would recur in the company and hamper the operations of company. Questions 1. The Evolution Of Imperialism In Shooting An Elephant By...

As society has progressed, the evolution of imperialism has come to a point where people see it has pure history. It has vanished from our daily lives as we have not recently witness a country trying to dominate another. In â€Å"Shooting an Elephant† by George Orwell, we are able to envision the lives of the Burmese as they were involuntarily controlled by the British. In the early 1900’s we are told a true story of Orwell himself where he was once established in Burma was apart of his military service. During his service, he describes his living situation by noting that the army as well as himself were not appreciated. He mentions, â€Å"As a police officer I was an obvious target and was baited whenever it seemed safe to do so.†(1) One day he†¦show more content†¦At this point, Orwell, â€Å"...had paralyzes him without knocking him down.†(5) The British army was one of the most powerful armies in the world at that time. The Burmese began to ta ke command over their freedom. They have wounded the British army but have not penetrated them enough yet to end them. After the first bullet has entered, the crowd displayed a â€Å"devilish roar of glee†(5). This is a pure example of the Burmese’s feelings toward the British being on their land overruling them. Orwell also noted that if he were to miscalculate his aim and miss the elephant the crowd would trample, reducing him to his grinning corps. All gruesome descriptions that represent the fight that the Burmese are willing to endure for their independence. While the elephant continues to break away, his force begins to diminish â€Å" One could have imagined him thousands of years old.†(5). We now see the power that the Burmese are capable of putting out. The British army is slowly giving up. Orwell shoots again â€Å"...he did not collapse but climbed with desperate slowness†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (5). Again, â€Å" That shot did it for him†(5), the Britis h army has lost all their strength to the Burmese, as the Burmese flock to the dying elephant Orwell fires two more times to end the pain and suffering once and for all. Leadership is seen throughout the whole movie. A contingency theory is when success is dependent on the specific situation at hand and how certain factors help to determine the success or failure. I feel this theory best explains the leadership of this group. Juror number eight displayed this theory throughout the movie. He did not know anything about the other jurors but knew he was going to be looked down upon for going against the majority vote. He listened to what each one had to say and the suggestions they had and adjusted his leadership style by the reactions of other jurors. This led him to having great success in this case. Roles that focus on completing the task are known as task roles. I feel that juror number eight was the major task role of the film. Juror number eight initiated a deeper conversation about the case because he was the first to vote not guilty. He provided good information that other jurors had not thought of before suggesting the kid was guilty. Juror eight listened to what others had to say about the case. He then gave his opinion on whether that information could be used or whether he thought it was un-useful information. He valued the opinions of the other jurors. Juror number eight also evaluated each and every situation. He assessed the ideas, arguments and suggestions of each point brought up. He thought critically about the information. Self-centered roles are roles that focus on the person themselves. They are not focused on the issue at hand. Juror number three was very self-centered. He blocks out what everyone else thinks and prevents others from participating. He disagreed with what everyone had to say and was not willing to compromise in anyway. He felt his vote was correct and that is the way it should be. Juror number six was also self-centered. He made unfitting comments and distracted the other members due to goofing off. Juror number six was always countered by juror number eight. Juror eight would evaluate what juror six said and would give his opinion on the topic. Roles that affect how the group gets along are known as maintenance roles. Juror number nine was a maintenance role of this film. He encouraged every persons comments and agreed with each member. He listened to what everyone had to say and provided comments when necessary. Task, maintenance, and self-centered roles all created a problem sometime throughout the movie. The foreman would step in and break up any arguments happening. He would bring the group back to what the situation at hand was. When he tried to give up his seat as foreman, many jurors told him what a good job he does and told him to continue being foreman. Many of the jurors involved with the case were selfish and one-sided. At the beginning they all felt that their opinion was the only one that mattered. Juror number eight was the leader and he was able to get the jurors all on the same page to unite their decision. The verbal behaviors that the jurors contributed were identification, conflict management, investigating language, and interdependence. The nonverbal communication included defensive and supportive behavior, good eye contact, and the body language of the jurors. The foreman-initiated conversation about the case. He also contributed to the conversation with the jurors. Juror number eight evaluated what the other jurors had to say. An example of procedural conflict in the film is when juror number seven does not agree with the process in which voting is being handled. Since he does not agree with the process he votes not guilty and says to get this over with, so they do not have to deal with it any more. Affective conflict is a conflict that revolves around differences or dislikes between individuals. The differences between juror number eight and juror number three are an example of affective conflict. Positive attitude was shown by juror number eight as he was attentive on the issue directly, respected all of the other jurors , and he wanted to fix the conflicts. Juror number three showed a negative attitude due to the tone of his voice, how defensive he was, and it continued to be competitive. Juror number eight was good and helpful when it came to resolving the conflicts with the other jurors. He was able to explain the opinion he had when each juror would bring up another issue with the case. In the end he was able to get everyone to agree. Argumentation is the action or process of reasoning systematically in support of an idea, action, or theory. One argument analysis brought up in the movie is the knife that the boy used to murder his dad. The pawn shop said it was a unique and that they sold it to the boy. The boy said he had lost it out of a hole in his jeans. Juror number eight then pulls a knife out of his pocket that he bought from a store and said there were others like it. So, the knife is not unique to the area. Another argument analysis was when the old lady states that she saw the boy kill his dad through the train windows while the train was passing by. Juror number eight then brought up that others have said that you can see through the windows of an empty passing train at night. It was brought up that it would not have been a clear picture due to the speed of the train. The last argument that I have found is when the old man that lives next to them said he heard the boy state Ill kill you to the father, h eard a body fall, and the boy run down the stairs out of the department. The old man said within seconds he heard the body fall to the ground. Juror number eight said there would have been at least a ten second pause and with the noise of the train going by there would be no good proof that it was the body falling to the ground. Each juror evaluates the situation differently due to the different personalities of each man. Juror number three is very judgmental toward the boy due to the relationship he had with his own son. Other jurors were not phased by the fact that they were deciding the rest of a childs life. They just wanted to be outside or anywhere but the court room. Juror number eight thought critically about the fact that he was deciding the life of an eighteen-year-old. It would be unnecessary to send him to jail for life or many years if he was not guilty. By the end of the movie, juror number eight was able to get all jurors to think about the fact that they were deciding the rest of the life of an eighteen-year-old.

After defeating the Dravidians of Central India in 15000 BC, the Aryans created some from of social structure (2005). However, McNeill (1990) argued that caste system started â€Å"long ago† (p.126). He stated, â€Å"About 300 BC, a Greek ambassador to the court of Magadha, named Megasthenes, wrote a book about India in which he described seven hereditary classes into which, he said, Indian society was divided† (p. 126).   The caste system, he remarked, was probably created for members of any group to do things without any hindrance coming from other groups. Caste system allowed group members to â€Å"keep most off their own ways and inner values, and preserve private family customs, while still spending their lives in close daily contact with all sorts of people† (1990). Aryans divided the caste system into four- Brahmin, composed of priests, teachers and judges, Kshatriya or the warriors, Vaisya, consisted of merchants and farmers, and Sudras, or laborers (Dowling, 2005).   Below the Sudras were the untouchables or outcastes (2005).The untouchables had the lowest position in the caste system. They were not allowed to enter temples and schools. They were even not allowed to get water from wells were higher castes obtained theirs (2005).   Some untouchables converted to other religious denomination such as Islam and Christianity to avoid the plague of being outcastes (2005). The foundation of the caste system was based on two things- samsara or reincarnation and karma or quality of action (Bogard, et al., 1997). The Brahmins believed that an infant inhabits the soul of another human being or an animal (McNeill, 1990). He explained: Souls that in former lives had gathered a heavy load of karma, then were born into babies of the lowest castes. Those who in former lives had accumulated only a little karma earned the right to be born as Brahmans; and those in between caste status. Persons who lived well in whatever caste they had been born to could hope for rebirth higher on the scale. ( p.126) Compliance with the rules may result to reincarnation into higher caste (Bogard, et al., 1997). Women, however, may â€Å"have the privilege of coming back as an animal if they are good enough† (1997). Other details on the creation of the Indian caste system, however, were not clear. McNeill (1990) noted that the Indian caste system was not just made up of four classes. The Brahmanas did not provide details of establishment of the caste system. As McNeill noticed, â€Å"In other words, we have here a theory rather than a description of what really existed† (p. 126). However the case may be, India’s caste system has been deemed â€Å"illegal† (Dowling, 2005, para.5). It was officially abolished in 1947 (McNeill, 1990). But it is integral to Indian society and has molded India into what it is now (1990). McNeill added that the caste system â€Å"allowed very primitive ideas and magical practices to survive indefinitely† (p.128). But even with its abolition, caste system still exists in some Indian communities, especially in rural ones (1990). Several measures have been taken up to reduce its effect on people and communities. The Indian government has introduced government privileges to the untouchables, now known as Harijan (2005). However, the Harijan still receive less opportunities, educational and employment-wise. Another Asian country that has stratified society is Indonesia, specifically the Balinese (Frederick and Worden, 1993). The Balinese reside in the islands of Bali and Lombok and some parts of Sumbawa (1993). The caste system dates back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the time when Javanese princes flew to Bali to avoid the â€Å"advances of Islam† (1993).   The Balinese has had, since then, mingled with the locals and asserted an anti-Islamic political perspective (1993). The Balinese caste system was based on the Indian caste system (â€Å"Social System,†1998). The three classes were the Brahman, Ksatriya, and Wesya. The three made up the Triwangsa, which means â€Å"three peoples† (1998, para.9). The Triwangsa was the â€Å"highest three societal stratification† (1998, para.9). The classes comprised 10 % of the populace and lived in puri (1998, para.9) According to a Hindu myth (â€Å"Social System,† 1998), Brahman or god, was separated. His mouth developed into the Brahman, his arms became the Ksatriya, his thighs were the Wesya class, and out of his feet borne the Sudra class. The classes are akin to the human being, different parts have different purposes but all need to work together to survive. Brahman comprised priests, scholars and teachers (â€Å"Social System,†1998). They also had special privileges in burial rights and were entitled to a â€Å"high level of ritual communication† (1998, para.12). The Ksatriya was represented by warriors, rajas or princes whereas merchants fell into the Wesya caste (1998). The majority of Balinese, however, belonged to the Shudra class (Frederick and Worden, 1993). The Shudra or Sudra class consisted of the commoners (â€Å"Social System,†1998). Unlike their Indian counterpart, the Sudra caste was not considered untouchables (1998). The Sudra served as laborers for the three classes (1998).   Since they did not know how to read or write, they depended on the upper classes to â€Å"interpret religious texts and prayers† (1998, para.16). Caste was based on birth (â€Å"Social System,† 1998). Each caste followed certain rules. Caste rules were strictly observed. One rule involved addressing Triwangsa caste properly (1998). Another one was the responsibility of each caste member to offer assistance to other castes when needed (1998).Compared to the Indian caste system, the Balinese caste was not that rigid. Frederick and Worden (1993) pointed out that the Balinese caste system â€Å"involves no occupational specializations or ideas about ritual contaminations between ranks† (1993). Marriage between ranks was not forbidden. Today, the Balinese are caught between adhering to tradition and adapting to change (Frederick and Worden, 1993).They are starting to question the traditions and are caught in the middle of obeying years-old rules or completely junking them in favor of modernization. If the Balinese are torn between tradition and urbanization, the Philippines have managed to phase out its own version of caste system. The Spaniards’ colonization of the Philippines gave birth to the concept of barangay (Cunanan, 1986).   The barangay was considered the â€Å"basic political unit† (1986). It consisted of thirty to fifty families. A chief datu, who came from the aristocrat clan called maharlika, led a barangay (1986). The maharlika had servants called â€Å"aliping namamahay or aliping sagigilid† (1986). The aliping namamahay were responsible for building houses, tending the farms of the datus, among other things. On the other hand, the aliping sagigilid were house-bound (1986).   They were either taken into forced custody or served as payments for debts (1986). The barangays were soon integrated into a bigger unit called encomiendas (Cunanan, 1986). An encomienda was â€Å"awarded to the conguistadores and religious orders for their meritorious services in the conquest of the native people† (1986). By 17th century, the encomiendas were completely wiped out in favor of creating provinces (1986). At present, the Philippines have a modern version of the caste system: the superior-servant or household help type. In Western countries, it is interesting to note that only the rich and privileged have acquired household help. In the Philippines, household help is common, especially in urban communities. These people are employed in houses to fend for the inhabitants’ need such as cooking their meals, doing laundry and cleaning the house. Household help are usually those that did not finish school or came from poor families. Majority of them live with the families they tend to, with some slowly being recognized as family members. For a country known for its homogeneity, Japan, surprisingly, had a caste system (Reischauer, 1988). The outcast group was called burakumin or hamlet people (1988). The burakumin roots backs to the feudal era. They were known by different names but were popularly known as burakumin, an abbreviation from a form which means â€Å"people of special hamlets† (1988). They were no different from other Japanese but what set them apart was their occupation. Reischauer (1988) described them: This group, which accounts for less than 2 percent of the population, probably originated from various sources, such as the vanquished in wars or those whose work was considered particularly demeaning. Clearly they included people engaged in leather work or butchery, since the Buddhist prejudice against the taking of all animal life made others look down of such persons, thought, it should be noted, not on the butchers of human life in the feudal society dominated by a military elite. (p. 35). Since 1871, the burakumin received legal equality but prejudice is still felt. Some Japanese are said to be â€Å"reluctant to have contact with them and are careful to check family records to ensure that they avoid intermarriage† (p. 35).   Nowadays, the burakumin are becoming â€Å"less recognizable† (p. 35.) Asia is truly a mix of both worlds. The importance given to class, status or society stratification is a direct reflection of its history and people. While some may say that social classes cause inequality in society, it has defined rules on how a society or system would work. Bringing discipline and order into a society was important in a caste system. It has also fostered unity among class members. Positive and negative effects are embedded into any social stratification system. But the very same diverse ideas and counterculture are the ones that helped shape Asia into what it is now- a wonderful hodgepodge that is deeply textured. Racism The Aryan Nations. The American Nazi Party. What are these groups? Why are they present in a land of supposed equality of all men? They are there because there are millions of Americans that believe in their message of white pride. The African American population is growing and Americans are now a mixed group of people. Black people are white people's neighbours, doctors, friends. With a growing unity between the two races, why does racism continue? The answer is simple. Racists from many years ago raise their kids in clans and white supremacy groups and teach them the ways of hatred. These kids grow up "brain-washed" that black people are their enemies and, taught by example, will continue this trend (The Volume Library; 1988). The Ku Klux Klan has been around since the end of the civil war. It is a roller coaster of a history. From extreme power, to rapid decline, and slow reemergence (Software Toolworks Encyclopedia; 1992). The clan, who is notorious for its violence, has a relatively innocent beginning. It was formed from some veterans from the confederate army and was first called the Kuklos Clan which, in Greek, meant Circle Clan. One person thought it would be a good idea to call it the "Ku Klux Klan" as a parody of the fraternity names which always had three Greek alphabet letters in it. They created the Clan to be mischievous and to do it without anyone knowing who they were which accounts for their costumes and masks. They, like most whites, were upset that the black people were free because black people were a constant reminder of the bitter defeat of the South. So to have fun they terrorized black people. Eventually the group grew, fluctuating, but grew to become the first white supremacy group in America and with that growth, their hatred grew as well into what was seen in the early and middle 1900's and what is seen today. Along with the KKK, other anti-black, pro-white groups formed and stemmed out all over the U.S.A. The Neo Nazis who are more commonly know by the term "Skin Heads", are a growing force in hate groups. There hatred of Hispanics, Jews, Blacks, and others are now the fastest growing force in America. The Skin Head movement is usually done by the younger kids. These kids are drawn to the Aryan Nations and Neo Nazis by the promise of free drugs, free booze, heavy metal music, ultimate freedom and rebellion. A lot of these kids stay because of family troubles at home and, like in a gang, feel like they have a family with the group and feel loved. "The skinheads are a family... A lot of us don't have what you'd call a home" commented Joshua, who is a 16 year old recruiter in California (United They Hate; Michael Kronenwetter). The race war was in full force by the 1960's. With the growth of white supremacy and their groups, black too had a weapon. Martin Luther King Jr. lead his people to march in Washington to end segregation and to form black unity for an equal and better America. Malcolm X, who was a Muslim, may have come from a different religion than his Christian counterpart, but had a very similar message and a similar fate. Both were assassinated. Today the hate groups of America have spread into Canada and are particularly common in Manitoba. The major sects are of the same name as their American cousins with a very similar message. Racism, despite much opposition, will never end. As long as there is fighting among a Jew and a Palestinian or hatred between a white and a black, Racism will be there. Only a utopian society can achieve such a dream. It is in human nature to have a few people that do not understand or possibly hate those who are different but, in fact, we are not different, we are judgmental and we are discriminatory, we segregate. We are unique individuals but among races we are equal and the same.
